Why patient experience must become healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria

When patient experience is treated as a service amenity rather than a system requirement, the entire healthcare infrastructure suffers — and patients pay the price.

In many healthcare systems across Africa, 'patient experience' is frequently misunderstood as hospitality — a polite receptionist, shorter waiting queues, or clean waiting room chairs. While these factors matter, they miss the fundamental point.

Patient experience is not an amenity. It is the structural integrity of the healthcare system as experienced by the person it exists to serve.

When health records do not move with the patient, that is an infrastructure failure. When insurance pre-authorisation takes 48 hours while an emergency unfolds, that is an infrastructure failure. When emergency doctors have zero visibility into a patient's allergy history, that is a life-threatening gap.

At Patient First Nigeria 2027, our core mission is bringing together policymakers, healthtech leaders, hospital directors, and patient advocates to redesign Nigerian healthcare around the human journey.
